The broad appeal of southern Italy is captured in this active adventure holiday, which explores the stunning and diverse region of Campania. Naples is a typically Italian city – stylish and full of charisma – yet with its own highly distinctive culture. At the ancient cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii you’ll feel like a time traveller as you witness everyday life in Roman times. The backdrop to the entire area is the looming giant of Vesuvius – you’ll climb to the summit to peer into the volcanic crater!
Next you’ll join the jet set on exclusive Capri to discover its delightful Mediterranean landscape, before returning to the mainland to the vineyards, lemon groves and meandering trails of the Sorrento Peninsula. Here you’ll really get to understand Italian rural life with a stay on a working farm, learning about typical local produce and the delicious secrets of the pizza with an included cooking lesson! There’s something for everyone in the Bay of Naples
Note that the summer sun can get very hot.

The south of Italy enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot, dry and sunny, and winters mild. From June to September temperatures are consistently over 25°C (and can rise to over 30°C in July and August). The weather can sometimes be changeable – thunderstorms are common in summer. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit.
take the plane
Fly to Naples on any of several airlines, including BA and BMI.
There is a wide range of hotel and villa accommodation in and around Positano.
If you are considering one of our recommended escorted adventure holidays, your family will spend four nights in comfortable hotels and three nights at an agriturismo (working farm), which your kids will love.
An adventure trip to the Bay of Naples would provide the following experience:
Naples & Vesuvius
From your base in bustling Naples see the atmospheric Roman ruins of Herculaneum and also have the chance to climb to the top of the legendary volcano, Vesuvius, and peer into its crater – activity permitting!
Capri & Sorrento
You’ll take a ferry across the Bay to Capri and climb to a small village close to Anacapri set high up in this mountainous island. From your base here you’ll visit the Blue Grotto by boat and see the iridescent ‘blue’ light. Back on the mainland at Sorrento you can visit Pompeii – buried and wonderfully preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD79. Walk the ancient streets, keeping out of the cart ruts, peer into the deserted houses and explore the massive public baths that were visited daily. Finally, take time to admire the ever-changing views across the bay with a choice of enjoyable day walks.
Your whole family is unlikely to be disappointed! Sorrento, in particular, is well-known for its cuisine – boasting seven of the top 20 restaurants in Campania and one of the top three in Italy.
Flights to Naples starty at around £100 return and accommodation varies considerably in price.
If you are considering an adventure holiday inclusive prices start at £779 for adults.
