Family Holidays: Pembrokeshire family holidays and breaks

Take the Family holiday rating 4 stars out of 5

Why

The county of Pembrokeshire is located in Wales and features some of the finest coastline in Europe; the only coastal national park in Britain. For long a travel destination for those in the know; particularly artists and outdoor pursuit enthusiasts, its growing list of family attractions, improved accessibility and excellent accommodation means it is becoming very popular with a much broader range of visitors. You can go whale and dolphin watching, visit the RSPB reserve of Ramsey; go to watch sheepdog training or demonstrations of falconry. Send the kids on a kayaking course and applaud them from the safety of a local pub. One of the finest destinations in the British Isles, there is no need to board a plane to have a wonderful holiday. Opening on June 30th 2008, and with great excitement, is Bluestone - the brand new next generation holiday village in a stunning location, perfectly suited for a family break in Wales, with luxury and secluded timber lodges, cottages and studios in the heart of the village, incredible on-site facilites, a rangers club for ages 6 to 11 years, (and even nannies), and of course herds of fun fun fun family activities, and 500 acres of stunning location.

When

Any time is a great time to visit Pembrokeshire. Besides being the only coastal national park, it is also the warmest, with the most blue flag beaches in any UK county, plus there's an awful lot more to see and do here!.

Do

Its quite an active list, for those not wanting to pursue exciting outdoor pursuits (often muddy, wet or featuring animals), then we suggest a relaxing B&B by the sea where you can watch others do this. For those quite happy to get wet etc then we recommend; Venture jet boats, which will take you on a wonderful outdoor adventure, spectacular caves, canyons and cliffs and a speedy look at the sea life. Or what about a Thousand Islands trip to watch the puffins and Shearwaters flock back at dusk to one of the offshore islands, or show your small children the seal pups on Ramsey and build budding conservationists. Kayaking, canoeing, sailing, surfing, rock climbing, abseiling, raft building, snorkelling, windsurfing, orienteering, problem solving, team building, leadership building are just some of the day or week residential courses that you can send your active children on. All to be recommended.

Eat

Food enthusiasts may be surprised to hear what is available in Pembrokeshire. Traditional Welsh specialities include cockles, laverbread, (seaweed served at breakfast), and of course fantastic Welsh lamb and beef. Wales has long been a producer of locally produced food and is now recognised as one of the UK’s top sources of organic produce. Eating good quality, nutricious and locally produced food has long been the ethos, now even 72% of schools in Pembrokeshire are involved in the Healthy Schools Scheme. Not resting on its laurels, traditional food is now accompanied with modern ideas, making Pembrokeshire a gastronomes delight. The Stackpole Inn, in Stackpole, voted Best Food Pub Wales for the year 2005 and 2006, is well worth a visit, they also received recognition of their use of the very best of local produce. Food events include, the National Farmhouse Breakfast Week, to promote foods produced by local farmers, an annual sausage eating competition and Narberth Food Festival, fast becoming the culinary capital, which was set up to join the worldwide ‘slow food’ campaign, to combat the scourge of fast food and unhealthy eating habits in northern Italy in 1986. If you are staying at Bluestone, then you will be spoilt for choice, with some great restaurants and cafes, as well as on-site shops selling quality locally sourced Pembrokeshire meat, a bakery selling fresh baked goods including fresh custard slices (yummy), and even a grocers.
