As everywhere in France, villas and gîtes offer great flexibility and value for money for family holidays, although you can also camp or stay in either modest but characterful hotels or plush châteaux. Among our recommendations are campsites on the banks of the Loire and some medieval city apartments.
Amboise is an especially good base from which to explore the area – central and with a wide choice of hotels and restaurants. A peculiarity of the region (and the neighbouring Pays de la Loire) is cave dwellings hewn from the soft rock of the area, and you can even find cave-cottages to rent or hotels with troglodyte rooms.
Motorhoming is another very popular option in this region, with plenty of servicing facilities (electrical hook-up and overnight parking), although beware of getting entangled in the narrow labyrinthine streets of some towns.
