We’re big fans of city breaks in Europe with kids – they’re a great way of keeping our broods entertained between proper family holidays, especially with the ever-growing network of low-cost flights (though we love to take the train where possible – Paris, Brussels and now Amsterdam are very easy with Eurostar).
We’ve hand-picked the best city accommodation in Europe for families, whether you want to immerse the kids in history in Rome or Berlin, or take a short break to child-friendly Dublin – to name just some of our favourite destinations. Some recommendations are luxury hotels with family amenities, including swimming pools for cooling down or letting off steam after sightseeing. Others are apartments handy for (but not limited to) longer stays, offering greater space plus cooking facilities. Some combine the best of both worlds – ‘apart-hotels’ or hotels that include apartments, giving you the flexibility to self cater in addition to hotel amenities.
Many of our recommendations are outside cities but within easy reach of them, which can be useful for those on a budget as well as better for those who prefer a quieter location. Many are campsites or holiday villages – those taking the kids to Venice, for instance, often stay at nearby campsites and take the waterbus into the city.
Lastly, some of the bast family short breaks combine a few days in a city with a themepark trip. Some of our favourite city and themepark breaks are:
• Paris and Disneyland Paris.
• Barcelona and Portaventura World.
• Copenhagen and the Tivoli Gardens.
