It’s a long old schlepp from the UK, but for the winter sun holiday of a lifetime with children, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region are hard to beat. We’ve hand-picked the best family-friendly accommodation, whether you’re looking for an all-singing all-dancing beach resort, an adventurous desert hotel or the base for a sun-drenched city break. With flight times so long and jet-lag inevitable, you’ll need to go for at least two weeks but preferably longer to make it worth the trip.
Bear in mind that the seasons are reversed, so Australia experiences its highest temperatures during our winter months (December, January and February are the hottest in Oz). This might make it too hot for your family, especially if you’re travelling with very young kids, although if you choose a child-friendly resort you’ll benefit from amenities such as swimming pools, air-conditioning and crèches/kids’ clubs. Remember too that some areas experience their wet season during our wintertime, and that Australia’s southern coast is busiest in January and the Easter holidays.
As a guide, Fiji has year-round temperatures of 26–31°C.
